Our Birth & Origin Story
Equity Before Birth was founded by Emmy and James Eide in Durham, North Carolina, in August 2020, with Joy Spencer joining as our first Executive Director that fall.
β
EBB began with a simple but powerful question:
β
π What could change if we created equitable opportunities for families before a baby is even born?
β
We started with the families most impacted by inequitable birth outcomes: Black birthing people and their infants.
β
The vision was bigger than any one program. We imagined a community that surrounds families with care, resources and love as they enter parenthood. A community that values birth workers and pays them a living wage. A community that connects people already doing this work with the families who need them most.
β
That vision became Equity Before Birth.
